Back Field Tidy Up

Trains may not have been running today but volunteers were still in, early doors, and continuing with the mammoth task of tidying up the back field. Today included mainly sorting out a pile of sleepers and neatly (ish) stacking the good ones and throwing the bad ones into the rotten pile.

The majority of the sleepers were well intact with chairs still bolted in place, the dumper truck was used to pull most of them out

The John Deere tractor was used to clear shrubbery and dump ash in its place

Rod Fitting

401's leading side rods were re-fitted today. These are placed on before the frames are lifted back onto the wheelsets otherwise the locomotive's slidebars would block the leading crank pins, making it practically impossible to fit the rods

Ashington No.5 Update

Report from 'The Black Gang'...

Ashington No.5 passed her cold inspection on Wednesday after which firebars were put back into the firebox. Today volunteers, Tom, Michael D and John set to and refitted the manifold, clack valves, gauge frames & glasses, washout plugs, mud-hole doors and safety valves.

The fire was lit around tea time and whilst she warmed through the opportunity was taken to empty the locomotives bunker of stale coal/coal dust which tends to clump up in the bottom corners. The safety valves successfully lifted around 8:30pm

ACC5 is now ready for her insurance steam examination which Engineering Manager Robin has booked for the 17th May.

View from the cab roof whilst the boiler was being filled up. A 13 hour day and a huge effort from NTSRA volunteers!

No.401 Update

401's wheelsets were positioned in the yard today in readiness for the frames to be lifted back on, Michael and Robin seen here aligning the centre and leading wheelsets

401's frame lift will be carried out in the next few weeks....more news to follow shortly
